What the 1881 Measures

Mode One: Direct Detection Reads the Actual Voltage
Press and hold the test button, then touch the probe tip to the test point. The LCD shows the value immediately. The rating covers 12V to 220V on both AC and DC. When the measured voltage stays below 70 percent of the upper range threshold, the tester shows the lower range value automatically, so low-voltage work is not lost on a coarse scale.
DC polarity uses the same contact method. Touch the probe to one terminal and hold the other terminal with your hand. If the display lights up with the live symbol and the digits, the probe is on the positive side. Reverse the setup and the screen stays blank, which tells you the probe now sits on the negative terminal.
Continuity checks need no power at all. Probe one end of the conductor, grip the other end, and the indicator lights when the path is closed. The same circuit can flag a dead fluorescent tube or a broken motor coil before you pull the housing apart.
Mode Two: Inductive Sensing Finds Live Wires Without Contact
For conductors you cannot safely touch, the 1881 switches to sensing mode. Press and hold the test button, which doubles as the sense electrode, and bring the probe tip near the insulated surface of the wire. A phase wire triggers the live symbol on the display. The metal conductor is never touched.
Bundled wires reduce accuracy, so spread them apart a little before testing. On a multi-core cable, verify the unit on a known live source first, then sweep the bundle. The symbol appears only over the energized line, which isolates the live phase from the neutral and the earth.
Mode Three: Breakpoint Detection Traces the Fault to the Meter
The same sensing behavior finds a broken wire hidden inside a wall or conduit. Hold the button down and slide the probe tip along the phase wire from the supply end. The live symbol stays on while the conductor carries current. At the exact point where the wire opens, the symbol vanishes. That spot is your break.
That converts a common headache into a short routine:
- Identify the live wire at the supply and confirm the symbol.
- Slide the probe tip along the wire surface.
- Watch where the live symbol disappears.
- Mark the spot before cutting into anything.

The Test Button Doubles as the Sense Electrode
Every detection function runs through one button. Direct readings, inductive sensing, and breakpoint tracing use the same control, which doubles as the sense electrode for non-contact work. The manual is explicit about the one thing you should never do.
Never touch the probe tip and the test button at the same time during a measurement. That completes a path through the tester, can short the circuit, and ruins the reading. Keep the probe tip on the work and your other hand off both contacts.
Safety Notes and Handling
The 1881 has a hand guard, and the manual is blunt about it: keep your fingers behind the guard. Use the tester only in dry conditions. Confirm it on a known live source before trusting a reading. Stay inside the 12V to 220V rating. Disconnect the unit after each measurement. When the display dims or flickers, replace the battery before the readings turn unreliable. Store the tester dry and out of direct sunlight.
