Infrared Thermometer Guide: What the Reading Really Means
An infrared thermometer measures the surface temperature of what is inside its measurement spot. Not the air, and not the inside of the object: the surface. That distinction causes more wrong readings than any other mistake, and it is easy to fix once you understand what the tool is actually doing.

When to Trust the Reading
The device reads the infrared radiation leaving the surface and converts it to a temperature. Three things change the answer: how far away you are, how big the target is, and how well the surface radiates heat, which is its emissivity. Miss any of the three and the number on the display will not match the real temperature.
Different Targets, Different Behavior
Shiny metal and black plastic behave completely differently under an infrared thermometer. A matte black surface radiates heat predictably and reads accurately at the default emissivity setting. A polished metal surface reflects background heat, so it often reads too low or picks up your own body heat.
- Motors, transformers, and housings: reliable readings.
- Brushed aluminum and stainless steel: suspect until you tape a matte patch on.
- Glass and clear surfaces: inaccurate without correction.
The fix for metal is simple: put a piece of black electrical tape or matte paint on the target, let it reach temperature, and aim at the patch.
Distance and Field of View
Every infrared thermometer has a distance-to-spot ratio, written like 12:1 or 30:1. At 12:1, a target 12 inches away is measured over a roughly 1-inch circle. Get too far back and the spot grows beyond the component you want, mixing in the temperature of the wall or the air behind it.
Work close when you can, and hold the trigger for a couple of seconds until the reading settles instead of pulling and releasing fast.
Where Technicians Use It Most
A few jobs account for most of the use in the field:
- Scanning a breaker panel for hot connections before touching anything.
- Checking motor housings for overheating bearings.
- Verifying a heating duct or pipe is flowing by comparing two points.
- Comparing the temperature of similar motors in a lineup to spot the odd one.
The value is comparative: an infrared thermometer tells you which of two identical machines is running hot, even when the absolute number is approximate.
