How a Two-Second Live Check Works
Hold the pen by the insulated body, keep a finger on the metal cap at the back, and touch the tip to the conductor. Your body becomes the return path. Within about two seconds the digital display shows the live voltage value, and a sound-and-light alert confirms the wire is live. No guessing, no switching ranges — touch, read, done.
The display is the part that surprises most buyers at this price. Instead of a neon lamp that only says “live or not”, you get the actual voltage figure in the range a home and light-commercial electrician works in. That makes it a genuinely useful first check before you decide which tool to bring in.
What the Pen Shows, and What It Can’t
Use it to sort the live wire from the neutral in a socket or junction box, to confirm a switch breaks the circuit it should, or to verify a cable is dead before you work on it. The digital reading plus the sound-and-light alert give you two confirmations in one probe.
But it is not a multimeter. The 88-2 reads voltage only: it does not measure continuity, resistance or current, and it is not rated for high-voltage or three-phase industrial work. Where the 88-2 Sits in the Voltage-Tester Range
The range is a ladder, and the 88-2 is the first rung: a budget digital pen that already reads the voltage value, priced for volume. The 6885-48 steps up to a higher-specification digital readout for contact tests. The 6877-58 works without touching metal at all, sensing the field around an insulated wire. The 1881 combines a neon phase lamp with an LCD for several detection modes in one pen.
