How to Use a Clamp Meter: Measure Current Without Breaking the Circuit
Most measurements with a test meter mean touching probes to terminals. Current is the exception: to measure it with a regular multimeter you have to open the circuit and connect the meter in series. A clamp meter does it differently. The jaws open, close around a single conductor, and read the current flowing through it. Nothing is cut, nothing is disconnected, and the circuit keeps running.

The Right Way to Open the Jaws
The jaws are not a handle. Squeeze the trigger to open them, slip them around the conductor, and release. Then, and this is the step that catches everyone: make sure the conductor passes alone through the jaws.
Clamp around a two-core cable and you will read zero, because the current going down one conductor and coming back the other cancels out. The jaws must surround only the single live wire.
Measuring AC Current
- Turn the dial to the AC current position, marked A with a wavy line.
- Open the jaws and close them around one conductor.
- Hold still for a second and read the display.
That is the whole technique. If the reading flickers, the motor it feeds is drawing an unsteady load, which is useful information by itself.
When You Need AC+DC
A standard clamp meter reads AC only, and is right at home on a motor or a panel. But inverters, solar systems, and battery banks carry DC current that cancels out in the same way if you clamp around the wrong cable. Inrush Current: Why Motors Trip Breakers
When a motor starts, it draws a spike of current several times higher than its running current for a fraction of a second. That inrush is what trips breakers and blows fuses. A clamp meter with an inrush function captures the peak. Set the meter, clamp the conductor, start the motor, and the display holds the highest reading the meter saw.
Frequency and the Rest

Clamp Meter or Multimeter?
