VC3268 Digital Clamp Meter: One Hand, Four Measurements, on a Live Circuit
A motor drive on the line is tripping intermittently. You need three numbers before you can say what is wrong: the running current on each phase, the output frequency of the drive, and whether the capacitor on the fan motor is still holding. That list normally means three tools and a walk back to the truck. The VC3268 covers it in one hand, in about a minute, without breaking a single circuit.

What the VC3268 Carries in a 130-Gram Body
The display is a 4000-count LCD, which is the practical dividing line between a basic clamp and one you can trust for small voltage changes. The body is 187 by 66 by 32 mm and weighs about 130 g with the batteries in, so it lives in a shirt pocket or the pouch on a tool belt instead of staying in the truck.
Around the dial you get DC voltage from 400 mV to 600 V at ±1.8%, AC voltage from 4 V to 600 V at ±2.0%, clamp current on 40 A and 400 A ranges, resistance to 40 MΩ, frequency from 10 Hz to 4 MHz, and capacitance from 4 nF to 4 mF. Two 1.5 V AAA batteries run it, auto-ranging is standard, and the meter shuts itself off when you forget it. Low-battery indication, diode test, continuity buzzer and overload protection are all in the build, not optional extras.
Clamping Current Without Opening the Circuit
The clamp is where this meter earns the word “clamp”. You do not cut a wire or series the meter into the load; you open the jaws, close them around the single live conductor, and read. The spec sheet lists DC current on the 40 A and 400 A ranges alongside AC, so a solar inverter string, a battery circuit or a DC-fed panel stays on the list of things this one tool can check.
The habit that matters is clamping one conductor, not two. A motor feed and its return cable routed together cancel out, and the display shows a misleading zero. When the reading does not make sense, look at what the jaws actually surround before you doubt the meter. That single habit explains most “my clamp reads zero” complaints.
Frequency and Capacitance: The Ranges a Motor Tech Reaches For Weekly
Frequency up to 4 MHz covers the checks that make or break a motor troubleshooting call. On a variable-frequency drive, the output frequency tells you what the drive thinks it is sending before you trust any other number. Set the meter to frequency, measure at the drive output, and compare it to the setpoint on the panel. A mismatch points at the drive settings, not the motor.
Capacitance to 4 mF pulls the fan-motor capacitor into the same work session. A capacitor that reads well under its printed value, or shows open, is the reason a fan hums without turning. You can verify it in place after the usual discharge step, then order the replacement with the part number in hand. Discharge the capacitor before you test, and check the measurement-category rules before pushing a cap test on a live board.
The Non-Contact Check Before You Touch Anything
Non-contact voltage detection on the tip is the two-second habit that keeps a fast job safe. Hold the meter near a suspected live conductor and the meter signals before you move the jaws anywhere near the metal. It does not replace the formal lock-out procedure, but it catches the “I thought I switched it off” moment that ends otherwise routine mornings badly.
