The dial on a digital multimeter is the most intimidating part for new technicians — yet once you can read the symbols, every function is obvious. Here is the reference list we hand to every new engineer on our production floor.
Voltage and Current Symbols
- V⎓ — DC voltage
- V~ — AC voltage
- mV — millivolts, for low-voltage signals and sensor work
- A, mA, μA — current ranges; always move the lead to the correct jack first
Resistance, Continuity and More
- Ω — resistance
- ))) — continuity; beeps when the circuit is closed
- →|— — diode test
- F, -|(|- — capacitance
- Hz — frequency
- °C / °F — temperature, on meters with a probe input
Non-Contact and Auto Features
NCV (non-contact voltage) detects live voltage through insulation without touching conductors — the fastest way to confirm a circuit is live. AUTO or auto-ranging means the meter selects the right range for you, which is why our 6000-count auto-ranging series is a favorite among maintenance teams.
How to Read the Display
The display shows three pieces of information: the value, the unit, and the range you are in. A 6000-count meter reads up to 5999 on each range — at the 600 V range it can show a full 599.9 V with one decimal place. Backlight and data hold keep that reading readable and locked in dark, awkward positions.
If You Learn One Habit
Always check the two symbols together: the function and the range. Moving the test leads before selecting the range is the cause of most blown fuses and damaged meters. Pair your multimeter with a voltage tester for a quick go/no-go check, and reserve the meter for the precise measurements.
