VC17B+ Digital Multimeter: ±1% DC Accuracy and a Temperature Input in the Same Hand
Two instruments get carried to most jobs when one would do: a multimeter for volts and ohms, and something else for temperature. The VC17B+ puts both on one dial. It is a 6000-count meter with a type-K temperature range, and its DC accuracy — ±1% — is the tightest in our current digital multimeter line.

Where the VC17B+ Sits in the Range
Above it in size sits the bench-style class — the VC9805 and its siblings — which trade portability for a larger 60 by 46 mm display and a wider current range. Below it sits the entry tier, the DT830 class of 1999-count meters. The VC17B+ is the portable meter that does not give up functions to be portable: 6000 counts, temperature, frequency, capacitance and a full 10 A current range, in a hand-held case at about 260 g with its holster.
For the compact end of the same idea, the DT700 series is smaller and lighter. The VC17B+ is the one you take when the job is not certain to be just volts and ohms.
The Measurement Set
DC voltage spans 600 mV to 1000 V at ±1%. AC voltage covers the same span at ±2.3%. Resistance runs 600 Ω to 60 MΩ at ±1.2%. DC current covers 600 µA to 10 A at ±1.8%, AC current the same at ±2.2%. Capacitance reaches 6 nF to 6 mF at ±10.8%, and frequency runs 10 Hz to 10 MHz at ±2.0%.
The temperature range is −20 °C to 1000 °C at ±3%, displayed on a 66 by 41 mm LCD with a backlight for dim plant rooms. Data hold freezes a reading when the probe is somewhere you cannot watch, and automatic shutdown protects the two AAA cells between jobs. Diode test, continuity buzzer, low-battery indication and overload protection on all ranges are all present.
That ±1% DC figure is the number to compare. Two meters can both say “6000 counts” and still differ by a factor of two in DC accuracy, and DC accuracy is what decides whether you can trust a 12 V reading to tell you a battery is healthy or a joint is dropping voltage.
The Temperature Range, and What It Needs
A type-K input turns one meter into two tools. Motor and bearing temperature, a cable termination running warm under load, supply and return air on an HVAC check, the barrel of an injection moulding machine — none of these need a separate handheld thermometer if the meter has an input for the probe.
One detail matters for the buyer, and it is not always spelled out: what ships in the box varies by order and by market. The temperature function needs a type-K probe, so confirm the thermocouple part number, the full accessory list and the per-unit cost with our sales team when you place the order, rather than assuming the probe is in the box.
Ten Amps, Frequency and Capacitance on the Same Dial
The current range is the other place this meter earns its belt space. 600 µA to 10 A in one input means appliance and equipment current draws can be checked directly, without a clamp or a shunt. Capacitance to 6 mF covers run and start capacitors in motors, compressors and pumps — the components that fail first and are easiest to misdiagnose. Frequency to 10 MHz verifies oscillator output and drive signals that a basic meter cannot see at all.
Put those together and the four most common reasons a technician walks back to the van for a second instrument are covered by one unit: temperature, capacitance, frequency and current above the milliamp range.
What the VC17B+ Is Not
The panel carries a CAT III 600 V rating at the jack row, with the VΩHz input marked MAX 1000 V DC and 750 V AC. CAT III covers the fixed installation: distribution boards, feeder circuits and panel-mounted equipment. It is also not a clamp meter. Measuring current on a live conductor without opening the circuit is a different instrument with jaws, and the two live side by side in our range rather than replacing each other. And it is not a bench meter: the display is smaller than the 60 by 46 mm panel on the VC9805, which is the trade you make for a case that travels.
