How to Use a Multimeter: A Practical Guide for Electricians and Buyers

When an appliance will not start, a socket has no power, or a motor is pulling more than its label says, the multimeter is the tool you reach for. This guide covers the measurements you will actually make, in the order you will make them, and the habits that keep the readings honest. The examples use the DT830 series, a meter we build at the CHINYOO factory in Wenzhou, but the steps transfer to any meter in your kit.

What You Are Looking At

Before the first reading, know the three parts: the dial, the display, and the probe jacks. The dial chooses the measurement. The display shows the number. The two probes plug into the jacks marked for the measurement you selected, usually COM for black and VΩmA or A for red.

Get the jacks wrong and nothing works, or worse, the meter reads nonsense. Get the dial wrong on a live circuit and you can blow the meter’s fuse, which is why cheap meters fail so fast.

First: Measure DC Voltage

The classic first test is a battery, because a battery is safe and the reading is easy to reason about. AA, AAA, 9V, or a 12V car battery all work for practice.

  1. Turn the dial to the DC voltage position, usually written V with a straight line above it.
  2. Plug black into COM, red into the VΩmA jack.
  3. Touch black to the negative terminal, red to the positive terminal.
  4. Read the display. A fresh 1.5V battery should show 1.5 or a little higher.

A battery that shows 1.2V instead of 1.5V is not dead, but it is tired. Below roughly 1.0V it will struggle to power anything. That single skill, reading DC voltage against a known source, teaches you how the meter behaves before anything gets dangerous.

Then: Measure AC Voltage

AC is what comes out of the wall, and this is the reading electricians take all day. Set the dial to the AC voltage position, written V with a wavy line. Insert black into COM and red into the voltage jack. Touch the probes to the two terminals you need to check. Live to neutral gives roughly 120V or 230V depending on where you work. Live to ground gives the same. Neutral to ground should give near zero.

Never switch the dial position while the probes are on a live circuit. And pick a range above the expected voltage first: on a 230V supply, the 750V range is safer than the 200V range, and still reads 230 fine on an auto-ranging meter.

Resistance and Continuity

Switch the dial to the resistance position, the horseshoe symbol, and the meter sends a small test current through the wire to see how hard it is to push through. The lower the number, the better the path.

Continuity mode adds a beep. Short the probes together and it should beep instantly. Then touch the two ends of the wire you suspect is broken. No beep means a break somewhere in the middle. This is how technicians find a snapped wire inside a wall or a cable, without taking it apart.

Current: The One Most People Get Wrong

To measure current with a standard multimeter you must break the circuit and put the meter in series with the load. That means cutting a wire, or pulling a fuse and using the fuse holder. It is awkward, and on a live circuit it is genuinely dangerous if the meter is set to the wrong range.

What is the safest way to measure AC voltage with a multimeter?
