Every multimeter sold for electrical work carries a CAT rating — but it is the spec buyers understand the least, and the one that decides whether a meter survives a surge or fails dangerously. What a CAT Rating Tells You

CAT (measurement category) ratings come from the safety standard IEC 61010. The rating describes how much transient overvoltage — a nearby lightning strike, a large motor switching off, a breaker opening under load — the meter can withstand when connected to a circuit in that category. A higher rating means the meter is built to survive bigger transients safely.

CAT II, CAT III and CAT IV in Practice

  • CAT II — measurements on circuits fed from a wall outlet: appliances, portable tools, consumer electronics.
  • CAT III — distribution-level circuits: panels, motor controls, distribution boards, fixed-installation wiring. This is where most industrial and maintenance work happens.
  • CAT IV — the service entrance: utility meter, main disconnect, where the grid enters the building. Highest transient exposure.

A meter rated CAT III 600 V is safe for transients up to 600 V in a CAT III installation. The voltage number and the category number are a pair — always check both.
