The A830L is the digital multimeter most people meet first. It is the compact, 1999-count meter that stays in a kitchen drawer and still reads a fuse, a socket or a battery when called on. The display is a 1999-count LCD, 43 by 21 mm, which is normal for this class. What is less normal is the backlight and data hold on a meter at this price. A backlight sounds trivial until you are reading a 500 V socket in a dark garage, and data hold stops you from losing the reading the moment you pull the leads away.
The 1.5 V Battery Test That Sets It Apart
The dial carries a battery position that loads a 1.5 V cell the way a real appliance does, then shows whether that AA or AAA is still good. That is the difference between this meter and the rest of the 830 family on the same shelf: the battery check is a switch position, not a workaround.
Be honest about its limits, because the spec sheet is. The battery test is built for 1.5 V cells. For a 9 V smoke-alarm battery, switch to the DC voltage range and read the number directly. And if your drawer is full of rechargeables, check the chemistry first — this test is designed for the common alkaline cell, not for judging every rechargeable in the house.
