The DT830 is the most widely recognized budget digital multimeter in the world. It has been in production for decades, and its dial layout is the one many technicians learned on. Why the DT830 Still Sells
The DT830 sells because it is cheap, it is reliable enough for basic work, and its functions cover most household and light industrial checks: voltage, resistance, continuity, and diode tests. It is the meter that rides in a homeowner’s drawer and the spare that sits in a technician’s truck.
The Dial, Front to Back
- DCV: DC voltage, the battery test and the most-used range.
- ACV: AC voltage, for sockets and line checks.

- hFE: transistor gain, a legacy feature most users never touch.

What It Measures Well
For DC voltage, continuity, and resistance checks, the DT830 is honest enough for most jobs. The meter reads to three digits and is fine for checking a battery, a fuse, or a switch. What It Does Not Do
Set expectations before you buy a hundred units for a fleet. The DT830 is not true RMS, so readings on inverter and variable-speed circuits are approximate. It has a low count, so it is not a tool for precision work. It measures current only in series, not through the jaws. And its accuracy rating is wide, which matters for anyone doing calibration or certification work.

DT830B vs DT830D
The two names you will see most are the DT830B and the DT830D. They share the same case and dial. The difference is in the extras: the D model adds a continuity buzzer and transistor test socket, which is why distributors tend to prefer it as the default.
How to Read the Display
The display shows three digits plus the range. If you set the dial to the 20V range and the display reads 12.46, that is 12.46V. On a 9V battery, a reading near 9 is healthy. A display stuck on 1 on the left edge means the reading is above the selected range; switch to a higher range rather than assuming the value is real.
